It is with sadness that we report the death yesterday of Bob McCarthy from the Otaki club.
Bob was frequent competitor on the Wellington scene and also a qualified umpire.
Bob was a member of the NZ Senior team to play against Australia in the Trans Tasman match in 2013 (Teralba) and 2014 (Rotorua).
In 2011 Bob, with regular Doubles partner Margaret Mordecai, won the Wellington Doubles Championship. Bob represented Wellington nine times in inter-region matches: Chanticleer Cup (2013-14), Haines Cup (2011-12-13), Southern Open Tri-Star (2013) and Southern Senior Tri-Star (2011-12-13).
Bob was recognised as the Male Senior Player of the Year in both 2011-12 and 2013-14 at the Wellington Regional Awards.
Our deepest sympathies are offered to Jan and family.

Twenty-eigth teams took part in the sixteenth annual Masterton Midwinter Doubles tournament at the Clareville A & P Showgrounds.
After five rounds of qualifying games only two teams were undefeated, Dez Grant/Sarah-Jane Wright and Annick Le Guen/Christine Strichen. (Day one qualifiers)
On Sunday morning, the second round pool play saw both the overnight leaders lose their undefeated run.
Unlike last year, the time limit was kept for the quarter and semi-final stages of the knockout, with several games not going the full distance.
The time limit did mean that the finals started in daylight and finish under lights around 6:00 rather than the typical 8:00 pm.
In the Trophy final, Dez Grant and Sarah-Jane Wright (St George) beat Kevin and Sheryl McFadgen (Kapiti) 13-3.
This is the second year in a row where the previous year's losing finalist wins the following year. Any takers on Kevin and Sheryl doing this next year?
The Plate final was won by Steve Frampton (Hataitai) and Alan Taylor (Kapiti) 13-12 against Alice Maguigan and Art Vernon (Christchurch).
The Bowl final was another close affair. Dene Futcher and Sheryl Parslow (Wanganui East) won 13-12 against Neville and Stefany Frost (Dunedin City).
It wouldn't be a Midwinter without a visit from the local wildlife.
