Hawke’s Bay Classic Doubles
20 September 2018
Forty teams took part in the twenty-second edition of the Hawke’s Bay Classic Doubles at the Napier City Pétanque club.
Like last year, the first day’s qualifying play was in pools, this time eight pools of five teams which meant that each team only played 4 competition games and sat out a Bye. Some teams took the opportunity to arrange unofficial games with other teams having the Bye.
In the Trophy section, the defending champions Lee Taffard & Nico Toyne were beaten by Junior Puleitu & Georgio Vakauta in the semi-final. Junior and Georgio went on to defeat Michelle Maxwell and Graeme Morris in the final.
The Plate section was won by John & Mary Church. The Bowl was won by Barb & Murray Johnston and the Consolation was won by Arnold Lander & Josie Parkin.
Otaki’s fourth defence of the Jacques Cochonnet Trophy was away at Upper Hutt.
Otaki started strongly winning two of the three first round games.
In the second round, they went one better winning all three games to retain the Trophy. In the third round they picked up a further two games to win the match 7-2.
Thirty players took part in the WPA Regional Singles Championship at Kapiti, a drop of eight players from last year.
Five players, Claire Wilson, Moises Burgos, Annick Le Guen, Graeme Morris and Nico Toyne, were undefeated after the first day’s play.
As is usually the case, some of the top qualifiers from Saturday struggled on Sunday morning and dropped down to the Plate section.
In the Trophy final, Dave Gatchell beat Moises Burgos 13-10 to claim his first Regional Singles title. Moises is the first player to be runner-up in three Regional Championships at the same time (Singles, Doubles & Triples).
The Plate was won by Steve Frampton 13-8 from Annick Le Guen. Christine Strichen beat Vaughan Husband to claim the Bowl and Michelle Maxwell was undefeated in winning the Bowl Consolation.
The Regional Seeding points have been updated using the results from the Regional Singles. Dave Gatchell has moved into second place following his win in the Regional Singles.
A total of 23 teams took part in the Mixed Doubles on Sunday, 22 September. The Mixed Doubles is an annual event in honour of Rex Hayes, who was a member of the Kapiti Club. Many players were from other clubs, who came to honour Rex.
Rex was a well known and respected person throughout Pétanque circles in New Zealand. He gave of his time freely, coaching and encouraging newer players. He also played at the top level, representing New Zealand.
The eventual winners were:
Trophy
Trish Biddle-Amoroa/Moises Burgos 1;
Dave Gatchell/Shirley MacDonald 2.
