Twenty-eight teams took part in the Masterton Midwinter Triples at the A & P Association Showgrounds at Clareville.
Three teams were undefeated after the first day's qualifying rounds: Andrew Joe/Brian Smith (5 wins, +35), Claire Bradburn/Graeme Pilcher (5, +34) and Bob Bridge/Sharon Cannon (5, +28).
Sunday morning featured pool play and only AJ and Brian maintained their undefeated record.
The afternoon saw the commencement of the knockout rounds and the removal of the time limit. AJ and Brian probably wished the limit limit still applied as they saw a 9-2 lead evaporate as they lost their semi-final to Myles and Michael.
In the final, played under lights, Myles Cowper and Michael Rocks took their revenge against Dez Grant and Sarah-Jane Wright, who had beaten them convincingly the previous day. Progress score: 1-0, 2-0, 4-0, 5-0, 5-2, 5-5, 6-5, 8-5, 8-6, 10-6, 13-6.
Denise Bavidge and Geoff Greer won the Plate, Kevin and Sheryl McFadgen the Bowl, and Noeline Corley and Paul Husband won the Bowl Consolation.

It is with sadness that we report the death earlier today of Rex Hayes of the Kapiti club. Rex was the inaugural winner, with the late Terry Lambert, of the National Senior Doubles Championship in 2006.
Rex took part in five Trans-Tasman matches against Australia (2006-10) and was a member of the Senior Goodwill tour to the United States in 2008.
In Wellington, Rex won the Regional Senior Doubles (2005) and Regional Singles (2010). He was a regular member of the Kapiti inter-club teams and took part in numerous Jacques Cochonnet matches. Rex was also club coach at Kapiti for many years.
In recent months, Rex took his band of Pétanque players to various public terrains around the region to play.
Rex's funeral will be held at the Kapiti Coast Funeral Home, 9-11 Hinemoa St, Paraparaumu on Monday, 9 June at 10:30 am.
Our deepest sympathies are offered to Shirley and family.

The Commonwealth Games start in Glasgow on 23 July. With Lawn Bowls being an included sport, it is unlikely that Pétanque will be added to the seventeen participating sports in the near future.
However, there is nothing to stop a Commonwealth Championship being created outside the Games structure. If nothing else, New Zealand would have a good chance of making the Top 16!
Current Commonwealth countries that are also members of FIPJP are: Australia, Brunei, Cameroon, Canada, England, Gibralter, India, Jersey, Malaysia, Mauritius, New Zealand, Pakistan, Scotland, Seychelles, Singapore, Uganda, Vanuatu, and Wales.
