National Senior Doubles Championship

5 December 2008

Twenty-four teams, including five from the WPA region, are competing in the National Senior Doubles Championship in Tauranga over the weekend. Three former champions are taking part: Doug Hay, Helen Hay and Rex Hayes.

Brian Smith is attempting to become the first player to win national Championships in four events, having previously won the Singles, Doubles and Triples.

WPA Open Triples

6 December 2008

Michael Rocks, Enoka Smiler and Dirk Winnie were undefeated in winning the 2008 WPA Open Triples. In the final they beat Leon Crosse, Sebastien Merval and Nico Toyne 13-11.

Wellington-Hawke's Bay Challenge

7 December 2008

Wellington were comprehensively beaten by Hawke's Bay in the annual inter-region match played in Palmerston North. Of the 22 games actually played, Wellington won just 7. Wellington's most successful players were Peter van Heusden and Nikki Winnie with 2 wins from 3 games.

National Senior Doubles

Doug and Helene Hay (Masterton) retained their Senior Doubles title at Tauranga over the weekend. In the final they beat Bob Bridge (West End) and Bill Peachey (Hibiscus Coast).

PNZ National Rankings

30 December 2008

Georgio Vakauta (Victoria Park) has maintained his position at the top of the end of year PNZ Player ranking list. Things are pretty steady at the top with eight of last year's Top 10 players still ranked in the Top 10.

Dirk Winnie remains the region's top ranked player (4). Claire Wilson (20) is the region's top ranked female player.

Points of note are:

• Two female players in the Top 20 (none last year)
• One South Island player in the Top 20 (none last year)
• Seven Wellington players in the Top 20 (five last year)
• Twelve Auckland players in the Top 20 (twelve last year)
• No Hawke's Bay players in the Top 20 (three last year)
• Only 3 players have played in the last 6 national championships: Bob Bridge, Christian Fouquet and Michael Rocks
• Herne Bay (16), Wanganui East (15) and Victoria Park (13) have the most club members on the lists
• The 213 players on the list are located in Wellington (69), Auckland (64), South Island (40) and Central (39)
• There are 99 female and 114 male players on the list (85 female/138 male in 2007)
• It is estimated that the list contains 6 juniors (under 20), 89 seniors (over 60) and 118 open players
• The number of players on the list has decreased by 10 over the year (223 to 213)
• The average ranking points is 6.69 (7.68 in 2007). The deflation has been caused by changes to the tournament grades which has meant fewer players are gaining significant points.
