First established in 2007, the Central Districts tournament is an annual competition between the Horowhenua, Manawatu, Otaki and Wanganui East clubs.
The clubs play for the Central Districts Shield, which was donated by Sue Gurr of the Wanganui East club.
The event is hosted by the previous year’s winner and this year’s tournament was held at Wanganui East. The format was 6 rounds of 45 minute games for teams of 8 players.
Each round, one person would play Singles, four would play Doubles and the remaining 3 would play Triples. The person playing Singles would change each round.
The first round had driving rain, thunder, lightning, hail and a howling wind. The weather did improve to just a howling, freezing wind.
After five rounds, Wanganui East had an unassailable lead, so it was decided to skip the last round.
Wanganui East have now won the competition seven times with Otaki having won it twice.

Hi everyone, this is to confirm postponement of tomorrow’s rounds 1 and 2 of the interclub due to very cold and wet weather.
The postponed rounds 1 and 2 will now be played on 20 August at the venues listed for rounds 1 and 2 i.e. Manawatu in the west and Upper Hutt in the east. Rounds 3 and 4 (west) and round 3 (east) will now be played on 11 September and round 5 for west will be played on 8 October. A new date for the finals day will be advised in due course.
It is a shame to postpone but we want to enjoy the day and not endure excessively wet and cold weather.
Cheers Graeme
