How to play Irish Pétanque
Overview
In Irish Pétanque, the boules are thrown and the cochonnet is only thrown once all boules have been played.
Rules
- A coin toss determines which team starts the game.
- The winning team draws a circle and throws the first boule. On an open terrain this determines the general direction of play. On allocated terrains, the boules must be played within the terrain boundaries.
- The second team throws one boule.
- The remaining boules are thrown alternately by each team.
- The team that won the toss, or the previous end, throws the cochonnet. The person throwing the cochonnet faces the opposite direction to the played boules and throws the cochonnet back over their head in the direction of the played boules.
- On allocated terrains the cochonnet is considered dead if it is thrown outside the terrain boundaries. On open terrains the cochonnet is considered dead if it ends up more than 3 metres from the nearest boule.
- Scoring of points is done as normal. The game is won by the first team to score 13 points. The team that wins the end starts the next end.
Note
Since the cochonnet is thrown last, players throw their boules to where they think the cochonnet will be thrown.
