Games played at Christchurch Pétanque Club
29 & 30 November 2014
The annual Tri-Star competition between Wellington, Canterbury and Southern was played in Christchurch on 29 and 30 November 2014.
The team arrived in Christchurch in time to have a practice session at the Christchurch Pétanque Club in Hagley Park.
As expected in Christchurch the pistes were very quick and the practice was a good opportunity to get used to the terrain especially as the front and back pistes are completely different from each other.
It is such a great atmosphere at the start of the tournament as you have an opportunity to meet and greet old friends from the South Island before battle begins.
Wellington competed well on the first day and could have easily been leading at the end of play had a couple of results in the last round gone our way. Wellington was third at the end of the first day but well in touch with the front two Canterbury teams with Southern in fourth place.
On Saturday night the four teams met for dinner and it was a good change to meet and talk with members of the other three teams in a social atmosphere after a very competitive day.
We arrive at the Christchurch Pétanque Club in the morning with high hopes of being able to close the gap between the top two teams and bring the trophy back to Wellington.
Unfortunately, we did not play welll enough during the round of Triples and as a result of this Wellington ended up in fourth place overall.
The camaraderie within the team was excellent and evryone got on well on and off the Pétanque pistes.
I would like to thank the team for playing the game in the right spirit and representing Wellington proubly.
I would like to acknowledge the excellent hospitality provuded by the Christchurch club over the three days we were in Christchurch.
The Tri-Star will be played in Wellington next year so this gives us an excellent opportunity to win the trophy back.

Games played at Manawatu Pétanque Club
The annual Haines Cup competition between Wellington and Hawke's Bay was played in Palmerston North on 13 December 2014.
A string Wellington team was selected and had high hopes of avenging last year's defeat and bring the trophy back to Wellington. Although Hawke's Bay was missing a couple of their top players they were still able to field a very strong team that would prove to be a very competitive unit. Despite a good start in the Singles and first round of the Doubles Hawke's Bay proved too strong on the day for the Wellington team and they retained the Haines Cup by a comfortable margin. The strong combinations Hawke's Bay were able to field, especially in the Triples, proved to be decisive in the final result and despite the Wellington team playing some very good Pétanque it wasn't enough to win on the day.
The atmosphere when playing Hawke's Bay is always very competitive but is always played in a very friendly and amicable manner and in the spirit of the game.
I would like to thank the team for playing the game in the right spirit and representing Wellington proudly and thank the Hawke's Bay team for travelling down to Palmerston North.
I would also like to sincerely thank Manawatu Pétanque Club who again were excellent host for the presenttaion of their pistes and the help of their club members in the kitchen.
