Forty-six teams from around the North Island took part in the fifth annual Hawke's Bay Summer Open Doubles at the Bay View Pétanque club over Waitangi weekend.
Defending champions Murray Porter (Bay View) and Ron Sandilands (Mt Albert) were unsuccessful in their bid to retain their 2003 title. Two losses in the second round of pool play consigned them to the Plate competition.
In an absorbing final, two-time champions Denise Bavidge and Geoff Greer of the host club raced to a 11-1 lead after four ends. Their opponents Michael Rocks and Roy Zeier (Khandallah) settled down over the next six ends scoring 12 answered points to claim the title 13-11.
