Ten players took part in the Regional Shooting Competition held in conjunction with the Regional Doubles. The top two qualifiers were Michael Rocks (Khandallah) and Annick Le Guen (Kapiti).
The finalists had previously met in 2018 (won by Michael) and 2020 (won by Annick). In a low scoring final, held during the Sunday lunch break, Michael shot 2 cochonnet to sneak past for the win.
Thirty-one teams took part in the Regional Doubles, held at the Horowhenua Pétanque club. This is the largest entry since thirty-two teams took part in 2009.
Three teams were undefeated after the Saturday's 5 round Snake (random draw) games: Vaughan Husband/Michelle Maxwell, Steve Frampton/Annick Le Guen and Bethne Gardner/Barry Hunt. Six teams recorded 4 wins and all seven teams who won 3 games qualified for the Trophy/Plate section.
On Sunday morning, only Steve & Annick won all three games. However, Vaughan & Michelle and Bethne & Barry won two games to progress to the Trophy Knockout.
The Trophy final featured 2018 champions Moises Burgos and Lee Taffard against Bethne Gardner and Barry Hunt. In the morning game, Moises & Lee won a tight game 11-10. The afternoon game was no less hard-fought, but Moises & Lee always had the edge and eventually prevailled 13-1.
In the Plate final, Denise Bavidge/Geoff Greer beat Enoka Smiler/Monica Smiler.
An interesting aside, all four finalists in the Trophy and the Plate came from the morning's Pool A.
The Bowl final was won by Ngaire Eriksen/Richard Turfrey from Christine Datkin/Shirley Madgwick. The Cup final was won by Kathy Gatford/Tony Gatford from Brian Bradburn/Claire Bradburn.
The two Wellington teams selected to represent Wellington at the annual Tri-Star tournament against Canterbury and Southern to be held at the Naenae Petanque club on 27th and 28th November are as follows.
Wellington Gold:
Debby Butler (Kapiti), Christine Daykin (Manawatu), Ngaire Eriksen (Horowhenua), Yvonne Futcher (Whanganui East), Dave Gwerder (Upper Hutt) and Tony Simpson (Whanganui East).
Wellington Black:
Claire Bradburn (Silverstream), Tony Gatford (Kapiti), Ann Hogg (Horowhenua), Vaughan Husband (Manawatu), Michelle Maxwell (Kapiti) and Alan Taylor (Kapiti).
There are 3 non-playing reserves for the 2 teams. They are Dave Gatchell (Horowhenua), Lynne Shepherd (Kapiti), Richard Turfrey (Whanganui East).

WPA Regional Senior Doubles Championship

Twenty-seven teams took part in the Regional Senior Doubles, held at the Otaki Pétanque club. This is the largest entry since thirty-two teams took part in 2012.
Three teams were undefeated after the morning's 4 round Snake (random draw) games: Carleen Fitzgerald/Lynne Shepherd, Kathy Gatford/Tony Gatford and Margaret Pomana/Tony Simpson.
However, success in the Qualifying rounds doesn't often translate to success in the Knockout section.
The Championship final featured Silverstream's Lorraine Gray & Ian Richards against Manawatu's David & Noeline Corley. After a see-saw battle Lorraine and Ian came out on top winning 12-10.
The Plate final was won by Graeme Morris/Barbara Nicholls from Ngaire Eriksen/Richard Turfrey. The Bowl final was won by Wayne Goodman/Shirley Madgwick from Brian Eastham/Tony Trembath.
The Cup final was won by Val Clark/Liz Donaldson from Alan Frost/Janet Frost.
Thirty teams took part in the fourth Pete Hamilton Memorial Triples at the Wanganui East club. Saturday was the usual five round Snake (random draw) with three undefeated teams. All three made it through to the Trophy knockout on Sunday afternoon.
The Trophy final featured the defending champions Moises Burgos, Murray Porter and Lee Taffard against Claire Bradburn, Debby Butler and Michelle Maxwell. Moises, Murray and Lee won in convincing style.
The Plate was won by Dave Gatchell,Ann Hogg and Graeme Morris from Alan Frost, Janet Frost and Judith Smith.
The Bowl was won by Christine Blackford, Betty Geiser and Linda Inglis who defeated Vicky Cox, Tony Mudgway and Andrea Thompson.
Lee-Anne Bartrum, Eddie King and Sandee Robb defeated John Galbraith, Patricia Galbraith and Ralph Priddle to win the Saucer.
The Pieman Trophy for the top Wanganui East team was won by Mataamua Biddle-Amoroa, Te Wai Haa Rangi Biddle-Amoroa and Rawiri Te Hina.
