Wellington Open Triples
12 December 2021
Nineteen teams took part in the Wellington Open Triples, held at the Otaki Pétanque club. This was one less than last year and five down on the highest entry of two years ago.
Only one team managed to win all their games in the qualifying 4 round Snake (random draw) games: Sharon Cannon/Bethne Gardner/Barry Hunt. Six teams recorded 3 wins with Joy Jordan/Doc Murray/Dave Wilmshurst rounding out the top 8 as the highest placed qualifier on two wins.
The Trophy final featured Paul "Spida" Anderson, Vaughan Husband and Richard Turfrey against Annick Le Guen, Kevin McFadgen and Claire Wilson.
An unfortunate cochonnet move on the first end, when Kevin was shooting for three, saw Spida/Vaughan/Richard pick up two points and they stayed in front eventually winning 13-6.
The Plate final was won by Christine Daykin/Wayne Goodman/Shirley "Flo" Madjwick over Gavin Jones/Marie Jones/Susan Robertson. The Bowl final was won by Carleen Fitzgerald/Barbara Nicholls/Lynne Shepherd over Alan Frost/Jan Frost/Judith Smith.
Trivia Note: Losing their semi-final to Annick/Kevin/Claire meant that Murray Porter/Michael Rocks/Brian Smith's run of titles ended at three. It also meant that this was the first time since 2011 that Michael Rocks was not participating in the final.
The video of the 2021 Pete Hamilton Memorial Triples final between Murray Porter/Lee Taffard/Moises Burgos and Debby Butler/Claire Bradburn/Michelle Maxwell is now on YouTube.
