Khandallah Mixed Doubles
16 January 2022
Sixteen teams took part in the Khandallah Mixed Doubles. Mary Khalil/Brian Smith (3 wins) and Marie Jones/Gavin Jones (2 wins and a draw) were the only unbeaten teams after the 3 qualifying games.
In the Trophy final, Mary & Brian won 13-10 against Joy Jordan/Neil Grant. The Plate final was by Robin Mann/Bruce Stephenson 12-10 from Linda Brown/Geoff Brown.
In the Bowl final Adrienne Gwerder/Dave Gwerder defeated Anne Grant/Simon Grant 13-5. Ruth Bradwell/Dan Harawira beat Karen Rodgers/John Scott 13-8 to win the Knife.
Other winners were Lee Matthewman/Alan Boaden (Roses) and Marie Jones/Gavin Jones (entry fee refunds).
Thirty-five teams have entered the 22nd Kapiti Open, which will be held at the Kapiti club, Paraparaumu Domain, Aorangi Road, this Wellington Anniversary Weekend (22-23 January 2022).
The field this year includes players from as far as Rotorua, Tauranga, Raglan, Turangi and Napier in the north and Ashburton and Christchurch in the south.
Thirty-five teams took part in the 22nd Kapiti Open, an increase of four teams from 2021. The field featured 9 former champions, including the last four winning teams.
Saturday was a hot day and several players struggled in the heat. At the end of qualifying, five teams were undefeated: Debby Butler/Bruno Falco, Andre Noel/Keelan Noel, Denise Bavidge/Geoff Greer, Murray Porter/Brian Smith and Kevin McFadgen/Alan Taylor.
Defending champions Enoka & Monica Smiler missed out on the chance to retain their title by finishing the day in 17th place on points differential.
On Sunday morning, the top 24 teams were in pools of 4, while the remaining 11 teams played a three-round Snake to find the top 8 and bottom 3 for the afternoon knockout.
Of the undefeated teams from Saturday, Murray & Brian lost two games to drop into the Trophy Consolation. In a replay of the 2020 final, they lost to Sharon Cannon and Michelle Maxwell in the semi-final. Debby & Bruno and Denise & Geoff both lost a game in the morning and then bowed out in the quarter-finals of the Trophy.
Andre Noel/Keelan Noel and Kevin McFadgen/Alan Taylor remained unbeaten until they met in the semi-final. On the final end, Alan's shot at the holding boule missed, so an extra tie-break end was required. Andre and Keelan picked up the point to make their first final.
The other semi-final featured Dez Grant/Sarah-Jane Wright and Christine Strichen/Claire Wilson. Another close game saw Dez & Sarah-Jane win 9-8.
The final saw Dez and Sarah-Jane get an early break only for Andre & Keelan to claw their way back. Again Dez & Sarah-Jane got another break. In a dramatic twist, Andre experienced cramp in his throwing hand and was initially forced to throw left-handed before switching to pointing in an attempt to hold the boule.
Somehow Andre & Keelan were able to claw their way back again. In the final end, Andre had a shot at a boule, only to miss and move the cochonnet. Dez and Sarah-Jane were unable to point close and with a "Kapiti Special" Keelan was about to pick up two extra points on his final throw to secure the win 13-12.
Aged 12 years, Keelan becomes the youngest ever Kapiti Open Doubles champion.
Eight clubs took part in the WPA Inter-club competition held at the Horowhenua Pétanque club.
A change in format saw teams of 6 players, with two optional reserves, play a Singles, a Doubles and a Triples game each round. Each player coluld only play Singles once during the day, and the team combinations had to be nominated for each round prior to the draw being made at the start of the day.
Kapiti had the perfect start winning all three morning games 6-0 to open up a 7 point lead on defending champion Manawatū, with Wanganui East a point further back.
In the fourth round Manawatū closed the gap slightly when Otaki held Kapiti to a 3-3 draw. Kapiti extended their lead again in Round 5 by beating Upper Hutt 6-0. Wanganui moved into second by defeating Manawatū.
In Round 6, Wanganui drew 3-3 with Kapiti, while Manawatū thumped Otaki 5-1 to leapfrog back into second place.
In the battle of the Hutt Valley clubs, Upper Hutt beat both its southern neighbours and Naenae beat Silverstream with the Hutt clubs finishing in that order.
In what is probably a first (previous records are incomplete), three generations of the Harawira family played for Silverstream.
