Held on Thursday, 15 February 2024, 7.30pm via Zoom.
Simon Grant (Secretary, Naenae), Anne Grant (Website, Naenae)
Hataitai representative
Accepted as a true and accurate record, Moved Kevin, Seconded Claire W subject to the following changes:
“PNZ Senior Doubles The PNZ Senior Doubles was held in Dunedin at the beginning of December with Claire Wilson and Yvonne Futcher winning the final.”
“Constitution In the draft copy of the Constitution, it states that the committee will consist of three members, the President, Secretary and Treasurer. The committee needs to consist of the President, Secretary, Treasurer and a delegate from each affiliated club.”
Claire B has made contact with the Waitangi Group of Petanque players but as yet has not had a chance to visit them. This will occur shortly.
As per agenda, one newsletter from PNZ, and affiliation notice and membership return. Claire B has also had various email correspondence with and from Sport NZ regarding the WPA Constitution. She will go back to them re legal advice.
Presented by Brian. The financial report was sent to the Secretary but due to him being away on holiday it was not distributed. Kevin to request Simon circulates the report when he returns from his holiday.
The annual zoom payment of $263.58 needs to be paid. A small surplus of $138 was made on the Women’s Triples held in Whanganui.
Any outstanding expenses need to be sent to Brian as soon as possible. Term deposits rolled over for another 12 months at 4.5% but also keeping enough money in our current account to meet the WPA’s ongoing expenses.
There is a new content that Brian has included in his financial report called “Identity Information”.
The WPA Women’s Triples was held at Whanganui with 10 teams participating. The winners were Shirley Macdonald (Otaki), Michelle Maxwell (Kapiti) and Anne Hogg (Otaki). There has been very positive feedback on how the tournament was run and the good work done by the hosts. Andy Gilbert was the umpire for the day.
The WPA Interclub was held at Horowhenua with all clubs providing excellent feedback on the format, how the tournament was run and the excellent job Horowhenua did in hosting the tournament.
Special thanks to Christine Strichen for running the tournament and for Tony Simpson who was the umpire for the day.
The Clubs confirmed that the current format should remain the same for 2025 and that if Christine agreed that she should run it again.
Congratulations to Upper Hutt for winning the Interclub.
It was confirmed that all WPA tournaments should close off 10 days prior to the date of the tournament. This is so the trophies can be sourced and engraved in time for the tournament presentations.
This will mean that some players may miss out on playing in the tournament if they are late getting their entry in. This may be a necessary consequence as we reinforce the need for all players to get their entries in on time.
Club delegates have been asked to remind club members that their tournament entry forms need to be submitted before the close off date.
The current reimbursement policy for one-and two-day tournaments was discussed as it was considered that the reimbursement may not sufficiently cover Club’s expenses.
Janet from Horowhenua will investigate the costs her Club faced when holding the WPA Interclub tournament and liaise with Brian. It was noted that regardless of the number of entries the costs to the club remain the same. It will then be decided whether we change the amount of the reimbursement and if so, a paper will be presented to the next WPA AGM.
Moved by Graeme and Seconded by Claire W.
Andy Gilbert umpired both the WPA Interclub tournament at Horowhenua and the WPA Women’s Triples at Whanganui.
Andy has submitted his report after the Women’s Triples.
Tony umpired the WPA Interclub tournament and will also be umpiring the WPA Triples at Horowhenua.
Claire B will be umpiring the Champion of Champions Triples at Upper Hutt.
Tony would appreciate any feedback from Clubs on the tournaments that had an umpire.
Nothing of note.
It was asked that a list of teams that have entered WPA tournaments be posted on the WPA website two days prior to the close off date. This would help players looking for someone to make up a team to play with. A reminder of the close off date could also be included. To enable this to occur the hosting club needs to send the list of entries to Anne Grant.
The singles and triples club championships have been completed with the doubles being held this weekend. Membership is currently 25 but there is some uncertainly whether all members will rejoin for another year. Some new members have joined recently.
Club singles was held with 24 entries. Winner was Claire W.
Membership is currently 28. Masterton is celebrating 30 years as a club in May and will be holding a special Open Melee to celebrate on 22 May. The Masterton Triples on 24/25 February still has 4 positions available. Unfortunately, Masterton cannot field a triples team to defend their win in the Champions of Champions last year.
Membership is currently stable. Lack of top players mean that they are not entering WPA tournaments, but they are supporting the WPA Club tournaments. The WPA Triples are on this weekend.
Family and friends’ day with a barbecue attracted 24 people. One new member has signed up. Numbers are slowly increasing with a high percentage being competitive players. Halfway through the club singles, with 16 entries.
Upper Hutt won the WPA Interclub tournament. In the latest challenge for the Jacques Cochonnet Upper Hutt defeated Naenae, with their next challenger being Manawatu. The Champions of Champions Triples is being held in early March and their Swiss Doubles competition is on 10 March. Membership is around 50.
Naenae ran a very successful Hospice one day tournament. Naenae lost against Upper Hutt in the latest Jacques Cochonnet challenge. Club doubles to be held on 16 March. Membership is at 41.
No attendance, no report
Currently membership is 14. The club triples are being held next weekend.
Membership is currently around 50 with 6 new members joining over the last couple of weeks. We are running a successful Twilight Petanque on Friday night with a small drink and nibbles after play. A successful Kapiti Open was run in January. We are currently trying to encourage our members to play in local club tournaments as the number of Kapiti supporting other clubs has dropped off. We played beach Petanque last weekend to promote the game where we got some interest but no new members at this stage.
Constituion / Incorporated Societies; Despite numerous attempts Claire B has had trouble getting a hold of Sport NZ. It would appear that WPA is a long way ahead of PNZ in reviewing our constitution. Sport NZ are holding a Webinar in March.
Claire B is keeping close contact with Barbara Whittington on PNZ’s progress. Claire B will liaise with PNZ and Sport NZ on when they would be ready with their versions of the Constitution. We will not rush into presenting a new Constitution at this year’s AGM with this decision being made at the next WPA meeting in April.
Meeting concluded 8:55pm
Next meeting Thursday 18 April 2024 at 7.30pm.
