President’s Report to the 2022 Annual General Meeting of the Wellington Petanque Association

The President’s Annual Report has three parts. Reviewing the past season. Looking to the future and, most important of all, acknowledging and thanking the many people who make it possible to operate the Organization.

It is not realistic to thank every person who has contributed to their Club’s operation and through that effort to the smooth running of the WPA. Without the Clubs operating well they would not be able to contribute to the operation of the WPA to the extent that they do. To all those members behind the scenes a big thank you. You know who you are and so does your Club, your work is greatly appreciated.

A Special thanks to Simon Grant and Val Clark who have done such sterling jobs as Secretary and Minutes Secretary. They have worked well together ensuring the minutes are done and correct and that any necessary paperwork is kept up to date. Keeping me informed and on my toes as and when necessary. Thank you also too Michael Rocks for looking after the banking. This must be very time consuming, particularly during the active part of the season now that all the tournament entries come in electronically.

The WPA predominantly runs tournaments for which are required not only premises but the willing cooperation of the Club’s officials and members. This often involves quite a lot of time and effort and cooperation with the Tournament Sub-committee. Thank you for all that you do. Thanks also to the members of the Tournament Subcommittee who put so much work in behind the scenes to ensure our tournaments run well.

Covid-19 has continued to impact on our sport whether it be changes to tournament timetables or last minute withdrawals due to illness. Everyone involved has had to be very flexible which I believe all participants appreciate.

Umpiring

There has been some movement in the number of Umpires but there is still a long way to go before we see non-playing umpires at all the WPA events. Thank you to those who have started to get involved. Please keep it up.

Coaching

Graeme Morris, Michael Rocks and I have been coaching at various Clubs when asked. This is a very satisfying activity so please don’t hesitate to contact us. Graeme Morris and his helpers have continued with the coaching squad which is very popular and the participants have said they find the sessions well worthwhile. The Selectors are finding it more difficult to select rep teams as the standard of play improves. Well done all those involved.

Web Site

Unfortunately Moises Burgos has resigned from the role of Webmaster, but Simon and Anne Grant from Naenae Club have offered to take over the management of the website. Fortunately Michael Rocks can provide them with the necessary access. Once this is done Clubs will be advised how to provide them with information.

I look forward to seeing you all on the piste.
