Jack Gazzard

15 January 2024

It is with sadness that I have to inform Wellington Petanque clubs of the passing of Jack Gazzard. Jack passed away last week.

Jack was a member of the Kapiti Petanque Club for many years but most petanque players will remember Jack as a regional umpire.

Jack selflessly gave up his weekends to umpire Wellington Regional tournaments and local club one day and two-day tournaments. Jack umpired for the love of the game and despite often travelling away to umpire a tournament never sought any reimbursement from the Wellington Petanque Association.

Jack was well respected by all players for the way he umpired the game and had a quiet persona that got his message across in a friendly but firm manner.

Jack was awarded Life membership of the Wellington Petanque Association in 2017 an honour he richly deserved for the hours and hours he spent walking around the Pistes in the region.

Jack’s funeral will be held on Saturday 20th January at 11.00am at the Kapiti Coast Funeral Home, 11 Hinemoa Street, Paraparaumu.

Our thoughts go out to Linda and family.

Khandallah Mixed Doubles

16 January 2024

Participants in the Khandallah Mixed Doubles

Eighteen teams took part in the Khandallah Mixed Doubles at the weekend. The format was a four round Snake (Random) draw followed by a single playoff to determine the team's prize.

The top section saw the only two unbeaten teams face-off. Debby and Moises won their four qualifying games quite convincingly, but were unable to make much headway against Rachel and Peter going down 4-9.

Parkwood Kapiti Open Doubles

28 January 2024

Twenty six teams participated in this event on Saturday and Sunday 20-21 January 2024 at Kapiti Pétanque Club. The event was sponsored for the first time by Parkwood Trust.

Kapiti Club’s largest tournament attracted players from as far afield as Auckland and Christchurch.

At the end of qualifying on day one, two teams were undefeated: Andre Noel/Alan Fletcher and Brett Maguire/Annick Le Guen. These two teams met in the Trophy final, won 13-11 by Alan Fletcher and Andre Noel in a closely fought match.

Inter-club Competition

29 January 2024

The Wellington Interclub competition was held at the Horowhenua Pétanque Club on Saturday, 27th January 2024. Eight clubs took part in the competition.

Six rounds were played, 50 minutes plus one end, with an extra end if the scores were tied.

The rain started in Game One and did not stop until Game Six. This made conditions tough, but spirits remained high.

The lead changed several times and scores stayed tight with only one point separating 1st and 2nd place after six rounds.

Upper Hutt won with Wanganui East in second place.
