Otaki New Year Mêlée participants

Thirty two players took part in the New Year Mêlée held at Otaki Pétanque Club on Saturday 7th January.

On a day that promised very bad weather, three games were played in overcast but warm conditions. Rain started at the beginning of the fourth game.

The winner was Alan Frost.

Khandallah Mixed Doubles

Participants in the Khandallah Mixed Doubles

Sixteen teams took part in the Khandallah Mixed Doubles.

In the Trophy final, 2022 champions Mary Khalil/Brian Smith faced Janet Hall/Michael Rocks. On the last end, Mary & Brian picked up a point to tie the scores 12-12. The extra end was won by Janet & Michael.

The Plate final was won by Betty Wilmshurst/Doc Murray from Robin Mann/Bruce Stephenson. In the Bowl final, Alison Zuppicich/Paul Bonsey defeated Anne Grant/Simon Grant. Ruth Bradwell/Dan Harawira beat Joy Jordan/Neil Grant to win the Vase.

Tri-Star Results

The 2022 Tri-star tournament was hosted by Southern Region at the Dunedin Pétanque Club on the 29th and 30th October.

Wellington Tristar Team

Wellington Team:
Claire Bradburn, Debby Butler, Shirley MacDonald (Assistant Coach), Michelle Maxwell, Graeme Morris (Coach), Vaughan Husband, Dave Gwerder, Kevin McFadgen
Six rounds of triples were played on Saturday and six rounds of doubles on Sunday.

Day One - Triples
Teams:
Wellington 1: Vaughan Husband, Michelle Maxwell, Kevin McFadgen
Wellington 2: Debby Butler, Claire Bradburn, Dave Gwerder
After three rounds Wellington were first equal with Southern Blue, each with four wins and 12 points. However at the end of round six they had fallen to third place.

Day Two - Doubles
Teams:
Wellington 1: Michelle Maxwell, Vaughan Husband
Wellington 2: Debby Butler, Kevin McFadgen
The Wellington combinations competed well and going into the final two rounds against the strong Canterbury team had a chance to take second place. However Canterbury withstood the Wellington challenge.

Kapiti Open Doubles

28 January 2023

Thirty-one teams took part in the Kapiti Open on Wellington Anniversary Weekend (21-22 January 2023). Competitors came from various parts of New Zealand and over the two days, treated supporters to some spectacular play.

The sun shone all weekend, adding to the great atmosphere. Many stayed to watch the finals. They no doubt would have been very tired after a long weekend of play.

At the end of qualifying, three teams were undefeated: Andre Noel/Keelan Noel, Michael Rocks/Murray Porter and Ann Hogg/Graeme Morris.
